Àríké is a name for one meant to be spoiled on sight. Funmilayo Tejumola, who signs as Démo Àjòké, paints her as a young woman preparing for marriage, adorned with the traditional elements of the occasion. In the artist's words, her eyes gaze eagerly ahead, into a future in which her care and determination help nurture a family.

Funmilayo paints Blackness in bold colour rather than dark tones, so the face is built from flat planes of violet, saffron and rose. The pattern lives on what she wears. Look at the wrap, ringed and dotted with small signs, and the white collar that repeats the rings at her throat. It is, as the artist puts it, a vision of African womanhood shaped by marriage, hope and responsibility.

Funmilayo Tejumola, who signs her works as Démo Àjòké, is a Nigerian visual artist based in Ibadan. Her figurative painting explores African history, cultural memory, identity and the ways traditions shape the present and future. She holds a B.A. in Fine Art from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and an M.A. in African and Diaspora Studies from the University of Lagos. Where Blackness is often painted in dark tones, she paints it in bold colour. She does so to "celebrate our heritage, express cultural pride, and tell stories that reflect the richness of who we are."
