Emmanuel Abakah painted her in profile on purpose. She is not seeking validation, he says; she is looking forward. That one decision carries the whole portrait: a woman who knows exactly who she is and isn't waiting for anyone to agree.

Look at her neck, half framed by a gold hoop. It is a tattoo of the map of Africa, and it is the heart of the work. She carries the continent wherever she goes, as a mark on her own skin. Her red glasses, in Emmanuel's words, stand for power, style and fearlessness. He made her to lift up Black women in their own identity. He wants them to embrace their boldness, and to know, as he puts it, that they are the blueprint.

Emmanuel Abakah

Undeclared · Takoradi, Ghana · 3 works on Raknida

Emmanuel Abakah is a self-taught artist in Takoradi, Ghana. He started as a child with graphite pencils, teaching himself realistic drawing. He later carried that discipline into digital painting, where his drawings take on bold, saturated colour. His subject is the Black woman: her beauty, strength and identity. A woman with vitiligo at sunrise, a mermaid with an afro and a crown, a woman who wears Africa on her skin. He makes each portrait so that women see themselves as powerful, unique and worthy of celebration.
