Joshua Omoijiade calls Babi the last in his horseman collection: “the bringers of death in a world of my fashioning.” The name reaches back to ancient Egypt, where Babi, bull of the baboons, judged the dead. Joshua paints his own version: a primate’s face ridged in blue and red, a mane of white hair flaring like smoke. He has one hand flat on his chest, a human skull held close. The eyes are level, steady on yours, as though he is weighing you too.

The culture · Ancient Egypt. In ancient Egyptian belief, Babi, bull of the baboons, judged the dead by a lake of fire. Joshua Omoijiade makes him a horseman of death in a world of his own.

Joshua Omoijiade, who works as Josheromon, is a Nigerian painter, concept artist, writer and architect whose work spans nearly two decades and several mediums. Self-taught in art after formal training in architecture and design, he paints in a way he calls "tradigital". He uses painterly digital work to convey complex, melancholic emotions and characters. His themes include liminality, sadness, rage and gluttony, the dark undertones of the mind that rarely get the room to be seen. He has shown in digital exhibitions in several countries and also publishes fiction and non-fiction.
