Joshua Omoijiade calls it “a snapshot of a life”: a sombre scene in bright, happy colours. Amid all the brightness and fads of life, the painting says, death is always staring you in the face. Look closer and things get weirder. A man with an afro talks with one black hand and one pale, skeletal one; a bald guest in dark glasses holds a jewel-like heart; a grinning skeleton cradles a laughing skull. And a man in neon green walks away. Why? It is a reminder of how fleeting pleasure is, and how close mortality sits. Dinner Party raises more questions than it answers, and that is its fascination.

The culture · Remembrance, Africa. Across many African cultures, the first pour of a drink goes to the ancestors, keeping the departed at the table: named, invited to every gathering, never quite gone.

Joshua Omoijiade, who works as Josheromon, is a Nigerian painter, concept artist, writer and architect whose work spans nearly two decades and several mediums. Self-taught in art after formal training in architecture and design, he paints in a way he calls "tradigital". He uses painterly digital work to convey complex, melancholic emotions and characters. His themes include liminality, sadness, rage and gluttony, the dark undertones of the mind that rarely get the room to be seen. He has shown in digital exhibitions in several countries and also publishes fiction and non-fiction.
