How it works →
Emmanuel Abakah made Sunrise for every Black woman who has ever felt unsure of her skin. He chose the morning because, as he says, every sunrise is different and every one is beautiful. So he painted a woman with vitiligo at first light. He gave her patches the same soft shapes as the clouds drifting behind her: not flaws to cover, but light breaking through.

Her eyes are closed. Not to hide, he says, but to feel the first warmth of the sun on her face. Emmanuel taught himself to draw as a boy, in graphite, chasing realism; here that patience turns into colour. And the message he wants her to carry is plain enough to read every morning: you don't need to fit in the light. You are the light.

Emmanuel Abakah is a self-taught artist in Takoradi, Ghana. He started as a child with graphite pencils, teaching himself realistic drawing. He later carried that discipline into digital painting, where his drawings take on bold, saturated colour. His subject is the Black woman: her beauty, strength and identity. A woman with vitiligo at sunrise, a mermaid with an afro and a crown, a woman who wears Africa on her skin. He makes each portrait so that women see themselves as powerful, unique and worthy of celebration.
