How it works →
Everything here is seen from very high up. Samuel Oladimeji draws the ground as hundreds of parallel black lines that swell and bend like water or sand. On it he sets a round white platform with an oval pool cut into one side. Two swimmers walk towards it, side by side. Further down, a few more people cross the stripes, small as punctuation, each followed by a long late-afternoon shadow.

The title is the clue: a drank pool, a pool you could drink, a whole lazy afternoon shrunk to the size of a glass. Oladimeji works in nothing but black line and white space. The lines do double duty, reading as ground, as water, as the curve of something poured. Look for the two tiny birds crossing the stripes below the pool. Look, too, for the shadows, all leaning the same way, which tell you exactly where the sun is.

Motifs in this work

Long shadows: a low sun, a whole afternoon in a few strokes

Flowing parallel lines: ground, water and poured drink at once

Tiny figures: scale itself as the joke

The artist

Samuel Oladimeji

Undeclared · Lagos, Nigeria · 1 works on Raknida

Samuel Oladimeji, who works as Altawhite, is an illustrator based in Lagos, Nigeria. His drawings use only black line and white space, and they are built on scale. Seen from far above, tiny people with long shadows cross a field of flowing parallel lines towards a pool. A tiger drawn in nothing but its stripes sits over its own rippling reflection, while one small figure stands below, head bowed. The restraint is the point. The paper does as much work as the line. The wit lives in what is left out, and in what the viewer has to find.
