How it works →
The pharaoh stands at the back, in the striped nemes headdress and plaited beard of a king. For once he is not the centre of attention. Sandro Perovic, a Croatian illustrator drawn to ancient Egypt, gives the picture to the family instead. It shows a queen with a cobra diadem and gold hoops, a baby held to her chest. Five more children of every age are crowded round, sitting, kneeling, leaning in.

Count the hands. The king's rests on a young man's shoulder; the queen's, ringed in blue, steadies the toddler at her side. The baby has one palm pressed flat against her. Egyptian art mostly kept its rulers distant, which is why the family scenes of the Amarna period, in the fourteenth century BC, still surprise. Perovic borrows that tenderness. And look at the wall behind them, painted with pale trees and cracked and patched like plaster that has stood for three thousand years.

Sandro Perovic is a Croatian illustrator based in Zagreb whose work is inspired by ancient Egypt. He draws its gods and rulers with an illustrator's warmth and a sharp eye for regalia. He picks out the striped nemes headdress, the cobra diadem, the sistrum, the broad gold collar. In Family he gathers a pharaoh, his queen and their six children into one close group. In Mafdet-Bastet, two feline goddesses, one fierce and one gentle, walk hand in hand. His wider Egyptian series reaches from the gods Anubis, Atum and Nut to the pharaoh Taharqa.
