How it works →
Heiwa is the Japanese word for peace. Eze Divine Favour draws it the way a tattoo artist fills a sheet: thick black ink, no colour, every inch busy. Heavy block characters crown the picture; the kanji for spirit floats at the left. Below, a hand rises out of curling waves, its skin drawn in rings like a fingerprint or a contour map. From the top of it a young plant pushes out its leaves.

Then the ribbon at the bottom speaks in Nigerian Pidgin: "you go see shege." You will see hardship. It is not the line anyone expects beneath a word like peace, and that is what makes the picture honest. The ribbon runs on past what can be read, as if the sentence is still being finished. Peace, in Eze's hands, is something you grow while the water is still moving.

Motifs in this work

The kanji 神 at left: spirit, watching over the scene

Seedling rising from the hand: peace as something grown

Pidgin ribbon, you go see shege: hardship named beneath peace

Eze Divine Favour

Undeclared · Enugu, Nigeria · 3 works on Raknida

Eze Divine Favour, who works as Ezeh, is an illustrator based in Enugu, Nigeria. His work moves between two registers: saturated colour, where figures stand against fields of rhythmic, script-like marks, and dense black-and-white ink, where every inch of the page is filled. He moves between languages too, setting Japanese beside Nigerian Pidgin. His recurring subjects are becoming, peace and shared humanity, and he treats them without sentimentality: change takes effort, peace is tested, and difference is drawn clearly before anything is said about what joins us.
