How it works →
Mojisola sticks her tongue out at us, and that is the first thing to love about her. KeO, the name Oluwatobiloba Emmanuel Komaiya signs with, describes her simply as a mask depicting the beauty of a young lady. He lays her out like a playing card: a red M in two corners, a miniature of her in the other two. It is all on a warm ochre ground.

Her face is green, her eyelids blue, her red locs threaded with beads, and a small star sits by her nose like a beauty mark. Purple spikes fan out around her. Mojisola is a Yoruba name, often translated as waking into wealth, and KeO gives it to a girl with no interest in behaving. Next to the composed faces of Abike, Shindara and Yemisi, she is the one who breaks the pose.

Oluwatobiloba Emmanuel Komaiya

Yoruba · Lagos, Nigeria · 4 works on Raknida

KeO is the name Oluwatobiloba Emmanuel Komaiya signs his work with, an illustrator based in Lagos, Nigeria. His three works on Raknida, Abike, Shindara and Yemisi, are built like playing cards. Each carries a girl's Yoruba name, its initial looping in two corners and a miniature of the figure in the other two. At the centre sits a mask-like face in flat, saturated colour. In every one the comb appears, as a body, as earrings, as hanging ornament. The result is playful and ceremonial at once, a hand of named girls.
