How it works →
In Nigeria, "my brother" can mean a sibling, a friend, or a stranger you are about to ask a favour of. Divine Momoh paints the version that counts. Two young men stand shoulder to shoulder in bright shirts and dark jackets, white chains at their necks. Their heads lean in until they almost touch.

Look at their faces and the marks are not the same. One carries a zigzag across the bridge of the nose and a spiral on the cheek. The other carries a looping line, a few dots and a small triangle. Whatever made them brothers, it was not matching marks. Behind them a wall of orange and black pattern is full of watching eyes, a heart and small faces. It is as if a whole community were looking on. My Brother is a portrait of chosen closeness, worn as easily as the chains.
