How it works →
She has already been noticed, and she knows it. Mikenobi draws a young woman with her head thrown back and her eyes closed, her hair rising in a dark crest. A string of blue beads swings free of her neck as if she has only just turned.

Look at her skin. Across her face, throat and chest runs a fine scalloped pattern, white over blue. It is the same texture that fills the cheeks of his Introspection, so she seems dressed in her own surface. Flower-shaped discs repeat at her ear and her chest. A pale moon sits behind her like a spotlight, and at its lower edge it drips, as though the paint were still wet. Around it, red scrollwork churns. Being seen is a pleasure, and in a city like Lagos it can be a strategy too. Mikenobi gives her the stage without asking her to apologise for wanting it.

Undeclared · Lagos, Nigeria · 2 works on Raknida

Michael C. Ekenobi, who signs his work Mikenobi, is a Nigerian multidisciplinary visual artist based in Lagos. His work sits where contemporary African storytelling, symbolic illustration and commercial visual culture meet. With over a decade in advertising, he has worked as an art director and visual creative on campaigns for major brands across Nigeria and Africa, in entertainment, lifestyle, FMCG and youth culture. That discipline gives his own practice its precision and narrative focus: bold illustration systems, doodle-inspired art and narrative-driven compositions, balanced by intuitive creativity.
