Pressure can come from every direction at once. Precious Emeka Anih paints it as dozens of hands reaching in on a hooded young man doubled over against a burning sky, his head pouring smoke. As a first son, he was “pressed away from art” by duty: three years of work he did not love, until his creative fire began to ebb. Psalm 12 opens with a cry for help. So does this, and the healing is still under way. To the right, the sky thins to pale gold, the one direction no hand comes from, and that is the way he faces.

The culture · Nigeria, West Africa. In many Nigerian families the first son, called opara in Igbo, inherits duty early: providing for parents and siblings often comes before his own dreams.

Precious Emeka Anih, who works as Weird Zesty, is a storytelling artist based in Lagos, Nigeria, with well over a decade of telling stories through lines and colours in the digital space. His illustrations draw on the Book of Revelation and the Psalms and set their words in the present day, often as his own story. "Stories are worth telling," in his words, "and the means of telling are vast." In his series Psalms of a Lazy Weird Boy, the psalms become a diary of pressure, failure and slow recovery.
