How it works →
Her eyes are closed. Toni Kuyinu paints the queen of his royal trio in profile, chin lifted, and lets her rest inside herself while the gold does the speaking. Nothing about her asks to be looked at, and that is exactly why you keep looking.

Now look beneath her eye: a short row of gold marks, the same marks the young man wears in Crown. Her lip is touched with gold, as his is. Toni painted the three works to hang together, and these small repetitions make them kin. Placed on the right, Queendom turns in toward the centre, a queen facing her household with her eyes shut. She is as composed as anyone who already knows she belongs where she is.

Motifs in this work

Closed eyes: composure, authority that needs no audience

Gold marks beneath the eye: shared with Crown, binding the trio

Gold bands through the braids: the hair itself becomes the crown

The artist

Toni Kuyinu

Yoruba · Toronto, Canada · 4 works on Raknida

Toni Kuyinu is a Toronto-based artist who paints young Black faces in soft greys and lets gold do the rest. His three works on Raknida, Crown, Kingdom and Queendom, were painted to hang together. They show a king in profile, a queen in profile, and between them a crowned young man who faces us with his eyes closed. The skin is modelled in charcoal tones and the metal is the only warm colour. Small gold marks repeat from face to face, beneath an eye, across a lip, so the three read as one household.
