How it works →
Get down to the level of the board and chess stops looking like a game. It becomes a landscape of towers and figures, close, glossy, slightly menacing. That is where Fortune Eze puts the camera for The Meeting. Pieces in the foreground melt into dark blurs. Behind them, on a rose and maroon board, three stand sharp: a black pawn, a white pawn, a black rook.

The white pawn holds the centre, its reflection running down into the polished squares. Nothing has moved yet. The picture lives in the pause before the first exchange, when both sides are still sizing each other up. Any outcome is possible, including a conversation instead of a war. Fortune lets the light fall on the smallest piece on the board and makes it the one we watch.

Fortune Eze

Igbo · Lagos, Nigeria · 2 works on Raknida

Fortune Eze is a photographer based in Lagos, Nigeria. Much of his work happens in the dark: light moves through a black space and the camera keeps its path. A gesture, a turn or a dance survives as a trace of blue and violet. His Spirit Fire pictures include Alive, a single loop of light, and Eyo Dance, inspired by the Eyo masquerade of Lagos Island. He also brings his lens down to the chessboard, where The Meeting finds tension in pieces that have not yet moved. He works with the Raknida team in Lagos.
