How it works →
Everyone has a version of themselves they call on when things get hard. Joshua Adegboye’s comes from his ancestors. He gives it a Benin-inspired mask, “a symbol of ancestral connection, identity, and the warrior spirit within me,” worn over a body worked in heavy charcoal until it looks carved, fists closed. The mask is his Edo roots, the charcoal the man they made: the strength carried from where we come from into who we become. The pairing is deliberate: organic charcoal meeting bold digital forms, the way, he says, his heritage meets his contemporary creative identity.

The culture · Edo, southern Nigeria. The Edo people founded the Kingdom of Benin, whose Oba still reigns in Benin City. Its guild artists made the famed Benin Bronzes, recording court history in brass and ivory.

Joshua Adegboye

Edo / Benin · Lagos, Nigeria · 2 works on Raknida

Joshua Adegboye, who works as St. Clvtch, was born in Lagos in 1999 and is largely self-taught. He learned to draw by watching his elder brothers and studied Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Lagos. He committed fully to his art in 2018. His practice moves between charcoal, acrylic, graphite, ink, digital illustration and 3D work. His pictures turn on masculinity, mental health, social identity and his Edo/Benin roots. Design training gives the work its structure; drawing gives it feeling. In his words, the pencil leads the march, and the paint blows the trumpets.
