How it works →
Three eyes, and only one of them open to us. In Nameless 001, Godwin Edet Munam lets a face come apart on a field of yellow. One eye is shut under a blue lid, one wide and violet, a third at the brow with a spiral for a pupil. Blue fingers, banded with carved-looking pattern, reach down from the top edge as if to lift the face away, or set it in place.

The series title is the point. A face with no name is no one's portrait, so it can hold whatever is brought to it: a mood, a prayer, a pause. Find the small stitched mark on the left cheek and the three dots below the lips, details a quick look misses. Nameless 001 is a face as a doorway, and the longer one looks, the more it belongs to the person looking.

Motifs in this work

Third eye with spiral pupil: inner sight, awake while one eye sleeps

Blue patterned fingers: hands from above, lifting or settling the face

Purple wedge: a shaft of shadow cutting the face in two

The artist

Godwin Edet Munam

Undeclared · Asaba, Nigeria · 3 works on Raknida

Godwin Edet Munam is an illustrator based in Asaba, Nigeria, who works as Gem Illustr8ed and signs each picture with a small boxed GEM monogram and the month it was finished. His subject is what cannot be seen: guardians, inner states, the spirit-self and the pull of ancestry, treated not as mystery but as an ordinary part of life. He draws in bold black line over flat, saturated colour, yellow, violet, night blue, and even at its most cosmic, the mood of his work is calm.
