Look again at the nose. Between the closed eyes of this star-flecked blue face, Godwin Edet Munam has drawn a small figure sitting cross-legged in meditation. Its head is the third eye at the brow, a pink flame burning at its base. The calm of the whole portrait comes from that one quiet figure inside it.

Nameless 002 is the second face in Godwin's series without names, and where the first breaks apart, this one settles. The skin is a night sky. The earrings are strung with a moon, a crescent, a ringed planet and a six-pointed star. Gold rings stack up the neck; the hair is a dense field of hatched marks. The reference is wider than any one people, and the mood is rest. It pictures the part of a person that has no name and needs none, at peace among the planets.

Godwin Edet Munam is an illustrator based in Asaba, Nigeria, who works as Gem Illustr8ed and signs each picture with a small boxed GEM monogram and the month it was finished. His subject is what cannot be seen: guardians, inner states, the spirit-self and the pull of ancestry, treated not as mystery but as an ordinary part of life. He draws in bold black line over flat, saturated colour, yellow, violet, night blue, and even at its most cosmic, the mood of his work is calm.
