A butterfly’s beauty is half the story; the other half is the change it took to get there. Adeyemo Ekundayo dresses three women for the moment of emerging: wide hats, faces barely there, and at the centre a woman in yellow from crown to hem, her jacket opening in rounded panels like wings unfolding. It is the final look of a show, the instant the room turns to see who has arrived, transformed. Beside her stand women in black and silver, and in lavender. Ekundayo keeps their faces in shadow and gives the clothes full volume, flecked with white light along every pleat, so the change is worn rather than shown.

The culture · Lagos, southwest Nigeria. Lagos is one of Africa’s fashion capitals: its designers, tailors and annual fashion weeks draw buyers and press from around the world to Nigerian style.

Motifs in this work

Wing-like panels: garments that open like butterflies

Shaded faces under wide brims: the clothes and carriage speak

White highlights on every pleat: fabric caught in light

Adeyemo Ekundayo

The artist

Adeyemo Ekundayo

Yoruba · Lagos, Nigeria · 5 works on Raknida

Adeyemo Ekundayo is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist based in Lagos, Nigeria, whose practice explores the metaphysical, political structures and fashion. Working in acrylic, oil, charcoal and digital media, he uses an expressive visual language, rooted in expressionism, of bold gestures, layered imagery and symbolism. Fashion is his way into identity and society; spirituality is his frame for what lies beyond ordinary perception. At the core of his practice is the belief that there is more to life than what we see. On Raknida, his figures are left in pencil while the clothes are painted in full.
