Huh! is the sound a face makes before the words come. Adeyemo Ekundayo catches a young man at exactly that moment: chin lifted, high-top sharp against the grey. His eyes slide sideways at something, or someone, just out of the frame. Nobody has to tell you what was said. The look already answers it.

Ekundayo usually works as a fashion illustrator, leaving the figure in fine pencil and painting the clothes in full colour. Here he turns that habit on the face itself. The drawing stays a sketch, hatched and loose, and the only paint is one upright band of ochre light falling across the eyes and cheek. It falls the way a beam from a doorway catches someone mid-reaction. Signed and dated '22, it is the smallest drama in his set and the most familiar.

The artist

Adeyemo Ekundayo

Yoruba · Lagos, Nigeria · 5 works on Raknida

Adeyemo Ekundayo is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist based in Lagos, Nigeria, whose practice explores the metaphysical, political structures and fashion. Working in acrylic, oil, charcoal and digital media, he uses an expressive visual language, rooted in expressionism, of bold gestures, layered imagery and symbolism. Fashion is his way into identity and society; spirituality is his frame for what lies beyond ordinary perception. At the core of his practice is the belief that there is more to life than what we see. On Raknida, his figures are left in pencil while the clothes are painted in full.
