Silk has always meant luxury. Mayowa Enoch Aiyedogbon gives the word to Ankara, West Africa’s bold wax-print cloth, and wraps a woman in it, eyes closed, face lifted, silken petals opening around her like a garden. “In Silk is me portraying African textile and fashion,” he says. The title is the statement: our own fabrics are premium enough to be couture, worn with pride every day and on every occasion that matters. All the colour in the picture belongs to the cloth, and she wears it the way one wears something precious, without needing to look.

The culture · Ankara, Nigeria and West Africa. Ankara, African wax print, began as Dutch copies of Indonesian batik. In Nigeria it became couture, tailored for work, worship and owambe, and chosen as aso ebi for celebrations.
