Stainless is a profile cut in pure black, eyes closed, set against a green so bright it almost hums. Ai_mayor gives the silhouette one white mark, a small circle with a line at the eye, like a monocle or a glint of light. He lets purple and pink flowers crowd in around the head.

The title is the key. Stainless is the word for a surface nothing sticks to, and the figure has that quality. It is unmarked and composed, with the colour and pattern around it never quite touching it. Black-and-white stripes break across the picture and a purple disc hangs behind like a sun, but the face stays clear. Mayowa Enoch Aiyedogbon builds his portraits by hiding and revealing the figure in layers. Here he reduces the person to an outline and still makes it the calmest thing in the frame. Find the white circle at the eye, the one point of light he allows.
