Find the eyes first. They are there, in a face turned straight toward you, but Mayowa Enoch Aiyedogbon has poured black and white marbling over every feature. This makes the eyes sink into shadow and the mouth dissolve into swirls that run down the neck. Behind the head, lilies open in teal, pink and pale blue against deep violet. A single black sphere hangs beside the cheek like an earring or a small dark moon.

All the colour belongs to the background. The person at the centre has gone monochrome, half-hidden in a pattern of their own. Camouflage is a portrait of the everyday skill of blending in: being present and unseen at once, protected and erased by the same disguise. How much of yourself to show, and to whom, is a question the picture leaves with you.

Motifs in this work

Marbled face: a person disappearing into their own disguise

Lilies in full colour: the life around a figure who withholds

Black sphere beside the cheek: an ornament, or a small eclipse
