Every tornado has a middle. In Vortex, Mayowa Enoch Aiyedogbon paints a moment of despair as a storm that pulls you in. Dark, torn forms and streaks of prismatic colour whirl around a pale, glowing circle. That circle, he says, is you, drawn into the middle of everything that is happening.

Now look for the thin white line that runs straight across the circle and out the other side. It is the quietest mark in the picture, and the most important. "The line across the circle is a line that represents stillness," he explains. His advice is the whole meaning of the work: "Just be still. Don't fight it, let things happen." With time, he promises, the tornado will die down, and things will go back to the way they were.
