How it works →
Phyno raps and sings in Igbo, the language of the East of Nigeria. He built his career on it when English was the safer choice. Clement Obioha's portrait is an homage to that. It is a caricature of the rapper in a purple hoodie and cap, beard full, hands clasped in front of him. He glances to the side with the calm of a man who knows the room is his.

Caricature is central to Clement's practice, and he uses it to tell African stories from an African perspective. He hopes his work leaves people with pride and certainty in who they are. Phyno suits that purpose: an artist whose success came from refusing to translate himself. Look at the eyes, slid to one side under the cap. Clement exaggerates the beard and the bulk and leaves that look almost exactly as it is, watchful and amused.

Chibuike Clement Obioha

Igbo · Lagos, Nigeria · 5 works on Raknida

Chibuike Clement Obioha, who signs his work Liberto Clems, is a Lagos-based artist best known for caricature. He works across pencil, acrylic and digital media, guided by a wish to tell African stories from an African perspective. A background in architecture and 3D environment design shapes his feeling for the space and atmosphere around his figures. His subjects come from Nigerian music, history and everyday life. He is co-founder of The Caricature Guys, which creates art experiences for clients, and across both practices his aim stays the same: pride, certainty in one's identity, discovery and peace.
