How it works →
Ethnic loyalties are often stirred up as political tools to divide. Clement Obioha paints a world where music and creativity bring Nigeria’s peoples together. He gives its three largest peoples one stage: each man in his own dress, each playing his own instrument under one purple night. It is the Nigeria he hopes for, where its peoples “live in peace and harmony”, and their differences make the music richer. Green robe and turban, flowing blue agbada, red feathered cap: no one gives up who he is, and still they keep one time. He painted it in 2018.

The culture · Nigeria, West Africa. Africa’s most populous nation has over 250 peoples; the largest three, Igbo in the southeast, Yoruba in the southwest and Hausa in the north, shape much of its life.

Motifs in this work

Green, blue and red: one colour for each of the three peoples

Three instruments: separate voices playing one song

Shared purple ground: one night and one stage holding all three

Chibuike Clement Obioha

Igbo · Lagos, Nigeria · 5 works on Raknida

Chibuike Clement Obioha, who signs his work Liberto Clems, is a Lagos-based artist best known for caricature. He works across pencil, acrylic and digital media, guided by a wish to tell African stories from an African perspective. A background in architecture and 3D environment design shapes his feeling for the space and atmosphere around his figures. His subjects come from Nigerian music, history and everyday life. He is co-founder of The Caricature Guys, which creates art experiences for clients, and across both practices his aim stays the same: pride, certainty in one's identity, discovery and peace.
