How it works →
Many homes keep a corner for what matters most: a photograph, a candle, a cup set down for someone no longer here. Marjory Yeko Jewitt draws the older version of that corner in black-and-white line so bold it looks carved: a dancer with raised arms, a coiled serpent, masks, vessels set down. An offering keeps the living in conversation with the ancestors, and Jewitt draws it with dignity, not mystery. Along the lower edge, women bring what they have: a drum, a bowl carried on the head, a child on the back.

The culture · Uganda, East Africa. Uganda’s many peoples hold faith in layers: churches and mosques stand alongside older shrines where families honour their ancestors and the spirits of land and water.

Marjory Yeko Jewitt

Ugandan · Kampala, Uganda · 5 works on Raknida

Marjory Yeko Jewitt, who works as Yeko, is a Ugandan illustrator based in Kampala. She draws in bold black and white, with a dense, rhythmic line closer in feeling to a woodcut than a sketch, and the same strokes run through sky, land, cloth and skin, so that a figure and her surroundings seem cut from one block. Her subjects are the women who hold East African daily life together, and the patterned vessels, cloth and cowrie-like shapes that fill her sheets come from the visual language of everyday Ugandan life, drawn with the same care she gives a face.
