How it works →
Ask any parent what they carry, and the list never ends. Marjory Yeko Jewitt draws a pregnant woman in white line out of a black ground, steadying a tall patterned vessel on her head: the weight above, the weight within, both held with ease. Yeko calls her son her Sun, and once you know that, the title reads like a signature. Under my Sun is a mother preparing a world for her child. Look at her belly, where Yeko has drawn two seed-like shapes inside a radiating pattern: new life rendered as ornament.

The culture · Uganda, East Africa. Called the Pearl of Africa, Uganda is home to more than fifty peoples speaking over forty languages. Family runs wide: aunts, grandmothers and neighbours all share in raising a child.

Marjory Yeko Jewitt

Ugandan · Kampala, Uganda · 5 works on Raknida

Marjory Yeko Jewitt, who works as Yeko, is a Ugandan illustrator based in Kampala. She draws in bold black and white, with a dense, rhythmic line closer in feeling to a woodcut than a sketch, and the same strokes run through sky, land, cloth and skin, so that a figure and her surroundings seem cut from one block. Her subjects are the women who hold East African daily life together, and the patterned vessels, cloth and cowrie-like shapes that fill her sheets come from the visual language of everyday Ugandan life, drawn with the same care she gives a face.
