How it works →
For Yeko, the mask is where a people and their gods meet. In her words it is a symbol of identity and a channel for the gods to speak and visit its people. Source draws that idea as a single face in profile, built entirely from pattern. The pattern is rows of cowries, open eyes, rolling waves, each band packed into the next.

Look for the panel of night sky, with a moon above a line of mountains, as if the mask held a whole landscape inside it. That is the sense of the title: the face is a doorway, and what comes through it comes from somewhere older and larger. Marjory Yeko Jewitt works in bold black line, as dense as a woodcut. Here every mark belongs to the face, so the identity and the world it comes from are drawn as one thing.

Marjory Yeko Jewitt

Ugandan · Kampala, Uganda · 5 works on Raknida

Marjory Yeko Jewitt, who works as Yeko, is a Ugandan illustrator based in Kampala. She draws in bold black and white, with a dense, rhythmic line closer in feeling to a woodcut than a sketch, and the same strokes run through sky, land, cloth and skin, so that a figure and her surroundings seem cut from one block. Her subjects are the women who hold East African daily life together, and the patterned vessels, cloth and cowrie-like shapes that fill her sheets come from the visual language of everyday Ugandan life, drawn with the same care she gives a face.
