The tradition

About Igbo

Igbo art comes from southeastern Nigeria, where masquerade, shrine sculpture and body art carried public meaning. The Igbo-Ukwu bronzes date to the 9th and 10th centuries.

Uli, the flowing line drawing painted by women on skin and walls, shaped modern Nigerian art through artists at Nsukka from the 1970s.

On Raknida, Igbo artists work in portraiture, illustration and photography. Themes of chi, community and the mask recur across the works.
